Life in South Calgary
South Calgary sits in inner-city southwest Calgary between 14 Street SW and Crowchild Trail. It was established in 1914 but stayed largely undeveloped until the 1950s, and today older bungalows sit beside new infills, townhouses and low-rise condos.
Most people know it as Marda Loop, the shopping and dining district along 33 and 34 Avenue SW that spans South Calgary, Altadore, Garrison Woods and part of Richmond. The name comes from the old Marda Theatre and a 1909 streetcar turnaround loop. South Calgary also has an outdoor pool, a community hall and the Giuffre Family Library.
